October is Energy Action Month and the perfect time to save energy, water, and money.

Did you know that conserving water can reduce energy costs? Here are five tips to help save hot water:

1. Only run full loads in the dishwasher and washing machine. Invest in a high-efficiency clothes washer. 


2. Don’t be afraid of new low-flow showerheads. They maintain high water pressure and have improved over the years. Look for the WaterSense label when you shop for showerheads. Every time you take a shower with a WaterSense labeled showerhead, you can save energy—equal to the amount of electricity it takes to light a 60-watt light bulb for nearly 7 hours.


3. Save by reducing your shower time by a minute or two. You can also save water by turning off the shower when soaping up and then turn it back on to rinse off.
   


4. Add aerators to all household sinks. They increase water pressure and help you use less water. Purchase one that uses 1 gallon per minute (or less) or pick one up at one of Greeley’s showerhead exchange events. 


5. Fix leaky faucets, a hot water leak wastes both water and energy. Tightly turn off faucets to stop unnecessary drips.
