The City of Greeley Art Commission is seeking artistic designs to be painted on Xcel Energy utility cabinets throughout the city. This will spearhead a new pilot program in collaboration with the City of Greeley and Xcel Energy. The first set of utility cabinets will be completed in June 2019. This pilot program compliments the City of Greeley’s current efforts of painting and wrapping artwork on city-owned traffic utility boxes and aims to improve community relations, reduce vandalism and beautify our community.

Due to the success from painting and wrapping artwork on city-owned traffic utility cabinets, the City of Greeley has been selected by Xcel Energy to be the first community in the nation to paint and wrap artwork on their utility cabinets. The City of Greeley will oversee the selection of artists and artwork in collaboration with Xcel Energy to ensure there are no detrimental effects to the electric grid upon the placement of the artwork.

Applicants must be at least 18-years-old and must possess their own liability insurance. Two electrical boxes within the City of Greeley have been chosen for this pilot. It has been determined that one utility cabinet shall be wrapped and one shall be hand painted. Applicants may submit designs for both. Proposed designs must be received on or before Friday, May 10, 2019. All applicants may apply through the website at GreeleyArt.com.

In 1998 the City of Greeley and City Council made a commitment to enhance the city’s public art collection by adopting a 1% for Art Program. This program sets aside one percent of the cost of new capital improvement projects as funds for acquiring, maintaining and commissioning art. The program has a solid foundation that instills a heightened sense of pride within the Greeley community.
